In our previous blog, we learnt Bol 1 – Gati 4, which tells us about the four possible destinies of a soul.

Now let's move forward and learn Bol 2 – Jati 5.

But first, what does Jati mean?

🌱 What is Jati?

In our Jain Dharam, Jati refers to the classification of living beings according to the number of senses they have.

There are 5 types of Jati:

  1. 🌱 Ekendriya – One-sensed beings

  2. 🐚 Beindriya – Two-sensed beings

  3. 🐜 Teindriya – Three-sensed beings

  4. 🪰 Chaurindriya – Four-sensed beings

  5. 🧑 Panchendriya – Five-sensed beings

Let's understand them one by one!

🌱 1. Ekendriya – One-Sensed Beings

Ek = One; Indriya = Sense

So, Ekendriya means beings with one sense.

Their only sense is the sense of touch.

Examples include:

🌍 Earth-bodied beings (Prithvikaya)💧 Water-bodied beings (Apkaya)🔥 Fire-bodied beings (Tejaskaya)💨 Air-bodied beings (Vaayukaya) 🌱 Plants (Vanaspatikaya)

Now all of these may look very different from us, but according to Jain philosophy, they are living beings with a soul - just like you and me!

⭐ Remember:

Ekendriya = 1 sense = Touch

🐚 2. Beindriya – Two-Sensed Beings

Be = Two; Indriya = Sense

Beindriya beings have two senses:

👋 Touch👅 Taste

Examples include:

🐚 Certain shellfish🪱 Worms and similar tiny beings

They can experience touch and taste, but they do not have the senses of smell, sight or hearing.

⭐ Remember:

Beindriya = 2 senses = Touch + Taste

🐜 3. Teindriya – Three-Sensed Beings

Te = Three; Indriya = Sense

These beings have three senses:

👋 Touch👅 Taste👃 Smell

Examples include:

🐜 Insects like ants, lice (those tiny insects in your hair), bedbugs, centipedes and other tiny pests found in grains.

They can experience touch, taste and smell.

⭐ Remember:

Teindriya = 3 senses = Touch + Taste + Smell

🪰 4. Chaurindriya – Four-Sensed Beings

Chaur = Four, Indriya = Sense

These beings have four senses:

👋 Touch👅 Taste👃 Smell👀 Sight

They have all the above senses, but do not have the sense of hearing.

Examples include: Flies, Bees, Mosquitoes, Butterflies, Spiders and other such insects.

⭐ Remember:

Chaurindriya = 4 senses = Touch + Taste + Smell + Sight

🧑 5. Panchendriya – Five-Sensed Beings

Panch = Five; Indriya = Sense

These beings have all five senses:

👋 Touch👅 Taste👃 Smell👀 Sight👂 Hearing

Examples include:

🧑 Humans🐶 Dogs🐱 Cats🐘 Elephants🐦 Birds🐟 Many fish and other animals

All humans are Panchendriya beings because we have all five senses.

⭐ Remember:

Panchendriya = 5 senses = Touch + Taste + Smell + Sight + Hearing

🧠 Let's Make It Super Easy!

As the number of senses increases, we add one more sense each time:
